Senior Group Village Head (SGVH) Jelasi is one of the Chiefs from Traditional Authority (T/A) January in Thyolo district that has benefited from Coronavirus (COVID-19) sensitization meetings that were conducted by Creative Center for Community Mobilization (CRECCOM).

"I have now understood what COVID-19 is all about, how I can inform my people on its preventive measures and this will help me to advise my people accordingly on how to fight against it," said Jelasi. Jelasi said this in one of the sensitization meetings on COVID-19 that CRECCOM implemented in the district.

Concurring with T/A January, the Chairperson for January Area Development Committee Richard Mindozo said that the meetings has been an eye opener to his committee for it had inadequate information on COVID-19. The Program Officer for CRECCOM, Jenner Namoto, said that sensitization meetings with community leaders are powerful channels for imparting messages on COVID-19 in rural societies. "Sensitization meetings with key leaders in communities on COVID-19 is fundamental at this particular time. Community leaders support their subjects on preventing the spread of the pandemic," said Namoto.

During the sensitization meeting, CRECCOM's target groups were Traditional Leaders, Religious Leaders, Area Development Committee members and others. To ensure that messages on COVID-19 reaches the participants, CRECCOM involved its stakeholders in the district. Thyolo District Social Welfare Officer, Health Surveillance Assistants, District Sports Officer, Thyolo Police, Child Protection Officer were among the stakeholders that accompanied CRECCOM during the meeting.

CRECCOM conducted the sensitization meeting through its MasterCard Foundation and Echidna Giving funded project called Improving Education Qualities in Community Day Secondary School in Malawi (IEQ-CDSS).
