Mother Group at Yamba Community Day Secondary School has brought back 19 girls from early marriages. Yamba CDSS is found in Traditional Authority (T/A) Mwaulambia in the Chitipa district. In an interview, Aida Mlumbu, a Yamba CDSS mother group member said that poverty and peer pressure are some of the factors that lead to child marriages among the girls.
She further said that the Mother Group managed to get the girls back to school with assistance from the Police, Ministry of Gender, Schools management, and knowledge they acquired from CRECCOM.
One of the girls who was withdrawn from marriage, Lonely Msukwa, 19, said that she dropped out of school due to a lack of support from her parent and this made it possible for her to decide to get married to a guy from Tanzania who was a mechanic.
“Being a Mechanic, I thought that he will be assisting me financially,” said Msukwa.
According to the headteacher for Yamba CDSS, Mr.Mnyenyembe,, about 6 girls who were withdrawn from marriage have written their 2021 MSCE examinations and are currently waiting for their results
