BEFIT'S JOURNEY TO ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AT CHIKAMVEKA PRIMARY SCHOOL

Gertrude Chunga, a dedicated teacher standard 2 teacher at Chikamveka primary school, Zomba Urban Zone, in Zomba district observed the struggles her students faced, particularly in grasping mental sums. Standard 1 to 4 students wrestled with basic arithmetic, hindered by limited resources and a traditional teaching approach that often left them behind. Despite Chunga's best efforts, the students found themselves falling short in their numeracy skills.

Then came the turning point: the BEFIT program. Introduced to Chikamveka Primary School, it brought with it a wave of transformation. As the BEFIT Coordinator at Chikamveka primary school, Chunga witnessed firsthand the impact of the program on her students' learning journey.

"At first, students used to encounter a lot of challenges in solving mental sums during lessons," Chunga recalled. But with the arrival of the BEFIT tablets, a new era dawned. The students eagerly embraced the interactive lessons, guided by the digital teacher named Alefa. Through engaging sessions focused on mathematics and reading, the students developed newfound skills and confidence.

"BEFIT tablets have different lessons, including mathematics, which has enhanced their abilities to tackle mental sums," Chunga explained with a smile. Suddenly, concepts that once seemed daunting became manageable, and even larger numbers like 40 were no longer intimidating hurdles.

However, the impact of the BEFIT program extended beyond just numeracy skills. Chunga noticed significant improvements in language proficiency among the students. "As BEFIT program lessons also incorporate Chichewa, students have managed to form sentences more quickly than before," she noted proudly. From basic vocabulary to sentence construction, the students flourished in their linguistic abilities.

But perhaps the most profound transformation was in Chunga's own teaching approach. Empowered by the BEFIT program, she shifted her focus from merely covering the syllabus to ensuring every student truly grasped the concepts. "BEFIT tablets, with Alefa guiding the sessions, ensure that students understand before moving on," she emphasized. It was a shift from rote learning to meaningful comprehension, from passive instruction to active engagement.

As the days passed, the once struggling students became eager learners, empowered by technology and guided by passionate educators like Chunga. With each passing term, the success stories multiplied, painting a vivid picture of a school transformed by the power of innovation and dedication.
