In the heart of Malawi, as the relentless tide of the COVID-19 pandemic swept across communities, hope found its voice through the unwavering commitment of Tisaiwale Youth Club. Amidst the chaos of misinformation and myths, their journey stands as a testament to resilience, community-led solutions, and the transformative power of awareness.

As COVID-19 tightened its grip on Malawi, myths and misinformation festered, casting shadows of fear over marginalized communities. Awareness campaigns became a beacon of light, revealing the importance of dispelling myths to combat the rampant spread of the virus.

Enter the COVID-19 Response Mechanism (C19RM), a beacon of hope strategically executed by a consortium led by the Ministry of Health and generously funded by the Global Fund. In this symphony of collaboration, CRECCOM, as a Sub Sub-Recipient, took charge of implementing non-biomedical activities and community interventions. Action Aid Malawi, as a Sub-Recipient, fortified the partnership across 12 districts in the Southern Region, including Mwanza.

Amidst this collaboration, youth clubs emerged as catalysts for change. Alfred Dike, Chairperson of Tisaiwale Youth Club, shared the urgency of their mission. "They used to say that COVID-19 has come to wipe away Africans...," reflecting the daunting myths that gripped the community.

Armed with the knowledge acquired through Community Led Monitoring under the C19RM project, Tisaiwale youth club staged performances in Traditional Authority Kanduku. These captivating events became a canvas for dispelling misinformation and eradicating fear from the collective psyche.

The impact reverberated across villages, illuminating a path toward understanding and resilience. Dike highlighted the metamorphosis, "People became aware of what COVID-19 was all about and how to prevent themselves from it." The paralyzing fear of vaccination dissolved, leading to a resurgence in hospital visits for various health concerns, including Malaria, TB, and HIV/AIDS.

Chisomo Major's testimony encapsulates the transformation, "I am knowledgeable of what COVID-19 is all about... I even shared my family on how to prevent themselves." The outreach efforts of Tisaiwale Youth Club touched over 50,000 lives, breaking the chains of ignorance and fear that had shackled the community.

At the core of this triumph lies the concept of Community Led Monitoring, an empowering tool that unmasked the hidden perils within communities. This approach enabled Tisaiwale Youth Club to identify the nuances of misinformation, addressing them with precision and cultural sensitivity.

Faced with the confusion between COVID-19 and TB, Tisaiwale Youth Club boldly embraced a door-to-door approach.

Dike emphasized their success, "We sensitised them on the difference between COVID-19 and TB... as a way of reducing the number of deaths." This initiative bridged the gap between fear and essential health services, particularly for TB patients who had been reluctant to seek treatment.

In the aftermath of Tisaiwale Youth Club's door-to-door engagement, lives were saved, and communities were rejuvenated. The initiative not only dispelled myths but instilled a sense of responsibility within individuals to seek timely healthcare, ultimately reducing the tragic toll of untreated diseases.
