Solister Nkhoma is a caregiver at Masanya CBCC who resides in Masanya village, in Ntchisi district. He said that he started his work in 2014 and it was out of his courage to start the work of being a caregiver at Masanya CBCC.
“During that time, I used to never know what to teach the children at Masanya CBCC and I used to only just teach the children what was coming up in my head and not focusing on the benefit of the lessons I was giving the children,” said Nkhoma
It was then in September 2023, when Creative Centre for Community (CRECCOM) under Let Girls Learn 2 project conducted a training where Nkhoma and one other caregiver at the CBCC acquired skills and knowledge on the role of caregiver and even different methods of teaching students at the CBCC to prepare the children for primary education.
Nkhoma said that he learned a lot of topics regarding his role as a caregiver.
“During the training on caregivers, I learned that there is a need of treating each student fairly and that every learner has to know how to read and write. This was not the case in the past. I also learnt on development of playing materials for the students at the CBCC using locally available materials as they do not need a lot of financial resources,” said Nkhoma
Nkhoma said that the training on caregivers acted as an eye opener in his role as a caregiver as it also taught him to ensure that issues of hygiene are observed among the students that he teaches at Masanya CBCC.
Before attending caregivers training under Let Girls Learn 2 project funded by Echidna Giving, caregivers at Masanya CBCC were also not able to effectively focus on all the learners at the CBCC but rather on one or two selected students at the CBCC. After attending the caregivers training by CRECCOM under the project, the caregivers at Masanya CBCC witnessed the importance of ensuring that every learner attains quality education in readiness for primary school education and that they know how to read and write.
Chisomo, 6 years old of age, is one of the learners at Masanya CBCC who has benefited a lot from the skills and knowledge that her caregivers from the CBCC have imparted to her. Chisomo said that her caregivers used to never encourage her and the rest of the students at the CBCC to be able to read and write, but suddenly, the caregivers are now able to encourage them to know how to read and write.
“I can now read vowels like “a e i o u” which my caregivers could not even teach us in the past. I am very grateful also because I now know how to read and write numbers which is a big success in my life as I want to become a Bank Manager when I grow up,” said Chisomo.
Stanley,7 years old of age, is also another learner at Masanya CBCC who is also able to read alphabet all because of the equal treatment of the caregivers at Masanya CBCC.
“I am even able to read the alphabet than before,” said Stanley
