Enhancing Inclusive Learning at Ng’ombekwawa Primary School

Before the implementation of the Girls Get Equal project's inclusive education training at Ng’ombekwawa Primary School in Lilongwe district, teachers lacked the necessary skills to effectively support students with disabilities. This resulted in poor academic performance and high dropout rates among students facing these challenges.

Samuel Luhanga, a standard 2 teacher at the school, reflected on the situation before the training: "Children with different disabilities used to face a lot of problems, and I didn’t know how to identify or support them until Girls Get Equal project was introduced at my school."

Following the training funded by Norad through Plan International Malawi and conducted by CRECCOM, Luhanga and other teachers gained crucial insights and techniques for inclusive education. Luhanga shared, "Now, I can identify different disabilities like physical and visual impairments. I ensure students with visual impairments sit at the front to see the blackboard clearly. Instead of relying solely on alphabets, I use symbols and pictures to aid those with other disabilities."

This shift in teaching approach has had a profound impact. Luhanga noted, "Students with disabilities are now performing better academically, and I feel more equipped to use advanced teaching methods tailored to their needs."

The Girls Get Equal project continues to empower Ng’ombekwawa Primary School teachers with skills that promote inclusive learning environments, fostering educational success and opportunities for all students.
