Mulepa CBO Director gets elected as ADC Chairperson following community’s confidence in his capacity strengthened by Milimo Activity

Mulepa CBO which is under Traditional Authority Kawinga is one of the community-based organisations that are being supported with capacity building initiatives by the USAID funded Milimo Local Capacity Building Activity in Malawi. The main aim of the Milimo Activity is to strengthen the local civil society organisations like Mulepa CBO through capacity building activities to enhance their self-reliance and sustainability.

Among other things, the Milimo Activity being a USAID assisted program, supports youths in Malawi to have the capacity to participate in civil society activities following life skills training or initiatives funded the US government.

Director of Mulepa CBO Omex Hussain aged 34 has demonstrated the strengthened capacity in community leadership skills for which himself as well as the Paramount Chief in the Kawinga area give the credit to the Milimo Activity.   In April 2024, Hussain got elected as the chairperson for the new Kawinga ADC executive.

Hussain amassed 34 votes whilst his competitor on the chairmanship position got 17 votes during the ADC elections. Hussain believes that he was elected based on his demonstrated leadership skills at Mulepa CBO strengthened by the Milimo capacity building activities that he has been learning a lot from.  “I have been learning a lot of skills from the Milimo capacity building exercises most of which I have used in the CBO as a leader and people appreciated the results thereof… that is why they voted for me,” claimed Hussain.

“For instance, I have led our CBO into building various partnerships and collaborations that have ended up in mobilization of resources for the CBO and the community at large and I learnt such skills from Milimo,” Hussain added. According to Paramount Chief Kawinga who inaugurated the newly elected ADC leaders including Hussain on 20th April 2024, he has seen great leadership skills from Omex and he has been observing highly improved developments in Mulepa CBO since they started getting capacity building support from Milimo.

“I believe that the skills that Omex acquired from Milimo through the CBO will be cascaded to the ADC as well in his leadership”, said Paramount Chief Kawinga. One of the members of the ADC, Evance Katete who also participated in the elections for the executive leaders, said that Omex is a kind of a leader that the community needs. “We voted for him because everyone of us admires how he leads the Mulepa CBO members and we need the same kind of leadership in the ADC,” said Katete.
