Transformative Impact of Child-Friendly Service Provision at Chisambo Primary School

Chisambo Primary School, like many educational institutions, faced challenges in providing accessibility for students with physical disabilities. The absence of a ramp surface at the school's library hindered the mobility of these students, limiting their access to educational resources. Despite being supported by Eastern Produce Tea Estate, the school struggled to address this issue until intervention by the Girls Get Equal (GGE) project.

Before the GGE project intervention, Chisambo Primary School lacked awareness regarding the necessity of a ramp surface in its library. The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) members were unaware of the issue until they underwent training on child-friendly service provision conducted by CRECCOM under the GGE project. Felix Chayekha, a PTA member, expressed the lack of knowledge regarding the need for accessibility measures, stating, "We didn't even know that there was a need for a ramp surface at our school’s library until undergoing training."

The intervention by the GGE project facilitated a significant change in the school's approach to accessibility. Equipped with skills and knowledge from the Child-Friendly Service Provision (CFSP) training, the PTA committee recognized the importance of creating a conducive and inclusive environment for all students. Chayekha remarked, "Thanks to CRECCOM for the training as it proved to be an eye-opener in terms of its importance at the school."

Empowered by the training, the PTA committee took action and approached Eastern Produce Tea Estate to address the issue. Recognizing the significance of accessibility, the tea company responded by constructing a ramp surface at the school's library. Chayekha emphasized the impact of the intervention, stating, "All thanks to CRECCOM through the Girls Get Equal project with the provision of child-friendly service at Chisambo primary school."

The GGE intervention not only facilitated physical changes but also fostered a culture of inclusivity and awareness within the school community. Through collaboration and advocacy, Chisambo Primary School transformed into a more accessible and welcoming environment for all students.

By prioritizing child-friendly service provision, schools can create environments that nurture the holistic development of every student, regardless of their physical abilities.
