Zomba Urban DIT Takes Charge of BEFIT Monitoring

The Zomba Urban District Implementation Team (DIT) is now taking the lead in monitoring the Building Education Foundations Through Innovation and Technology (BEFIT) program, a critical step in ensuring the program's long-term success and sustainability.
As part of this transition, the DIT recently conducted monitoring visits to Chikamveka, Mpotola, and St. Joseph Primary Schools to assess progress and provide support where needed.
During the visits, it was evident that pupils are actively engaged in learning through tablets. Classrooms were filled with energy as learners confidently interacted with the BEFIT learning apps, demonstrating a strong understanding of how to use and care for the tablets.

Teachers were also seen strategically positioned, guiding pupils and offering assistance where needed.
"This is great progress," said Ignatius Kameni, Chief Education Officer for Zomba Urban. "The learners know what they are doing, and they have been well trained in using the tablets. It’s impressive to see how teachers are also actively supporting them."
At Chikamveka Primary School, Headteacher Eunice Thewe shared how the program has transformed learning: "Learners have fully embraced the tablet technology. It’s amazing to see how excited they are to use the tablets every day. They are eager to learn, and their confidence in using digital tools is growing."

This transition from the Implementing Support Partner (ISP), the Creative Centre for Community Mobilisation (CRECCOM), to the District Implementation Team (DIT) marks an important milestone.
With the DIT now taking the lead in school monitoring and support, local ownership of the program is being strengthened. This ensures that BEFIT remains effective and continues to benefit learners beyond the ISP implementation phase.
BEFIT, a Malawi Government-led program, is designed to enhance foundational literacy and numeracy skills for Standard 1 to 4 learners in public primary schools. Through the use of interactive, self-paced learning on Android tablets, the program is helping to close learning gaps and improve education outcomes.
